a treasure in tatting

This pillowcase is a treasure that I recently found at the thrift store.  Minus the edging.

(btw--when I see items like this with $.25 price tag attached it is such a bittersweet feeling --- sweet because it is now in my possession, but bitter because the time & love that must have gone into embroidering this pillowcase...well, it is a shame that it ended up tossed in a bargain bin at the local thrift store.)

And since I have been practicing with this tatted 'swatch' of edging

that I found in this book from Annie's Attic:

I knew this edging would look so splendid on the pillowcase.

In pink!

So I tatted & tatted & tatted inches and inches of pink edging for this pillow; attached it by hand-sewing it with needle & thread right to the very edge of the pillowcase.

Such a lovely treasure.

This is beautiful! I wish I could tat but I don't have anyone to teach me. My grandmother could tat but sadly no one bothered to learn from her ;-( I agree with your statement about someone's hard work just tossed aside. I feel the same way when I see a crocheted item at a yard sale.

but it's so much better to have been tossed into the bargain bin, so you could find it, than it being tossed in the garbage bin...what you have done to it will keep it feeling loved forever...I never find treasures like that at our charity shop...I love the hand embroidery on this. I have one of my mother's old
"tea cloths", as they were called, and don't use it for fear of making more stains on it!!!! plus, we don't have "tea" like that anymore... mores the shame!!!

How beautiful! I know exactly what you mean though; it always breaks my heart to see crocheted afghans or whatnot in thrift stores, and I hope with all my might that my work never ends up tossed aside and forgotten. I love what you've done with this pillow though! It looks absolutely darling, and just think of how happy whoever embroidered it would be to see the love you've added.

Wow, that pink tatted edge really sets the pillow case off and I ♥♥♥ the blue tatted edging too.

It is a shame that all this wonderful handiwork ended up in the bargain bin, but so wonderful that you found it, gave it a home and can appreciate the work that's gone into it.

I am in awe. This is so beautiful. I wish I could A: tat, and B: find treasures like that at our local charity shops. There's only ever horrifying awful things there!

I vey much understand your feelings on the cheapness of people's hard work. However, I now face the opposite situation in that one of our op shops sells anything vintage at heirloom prices putting these little beauties out of the realm of the poorer population who may also appreciate beauty. If the answer is that many may not care properly for such finds then I still say that most who would buy such would still have appreciation for their beauty even if not the work involved. I always snap up any tatting. It is the first thing I take when a new pile of doilies, etc comes in. Love yours too. Cherrie.

A treasure made that much more beautiful by you. One of these days I will attempt to learn to Tatt and when I do expect a lot of email questions. :)

that is amazing!! I completely agree - who would get rid of such a treasure, but how wonderful that it fell into the right hands.

I can't believe you made that tatting. It's so lovely.

Wow, you´re so good in all this and your "lace" looks wonderful.

One thing I would love to know: what´s this pink plastic thing on some of the pictures? It seems that the wool gets into it, but that can´t be, can it?

Wow, Dawn, this is beautiful! I must have been oblivious--I didn't remember that you knew how to do tatting.

I know what you mean feeling bad about the low price of the pillowcase, but better it be sold for a low price to someone who will love it than to sit Ina drawer somewhere unwanted. I always get a little depressed when I see all the doilies at thrift shops. I want them to have a home! :)

So pretty - I know absolutely nothing about tatting - guess it is something I should explore as it really is beautiful! Love the embroidery on the pillowcase.

This is so pretty! I often find myself thinking the same thing when in antique stores, etc. Sometimes I wonder if 100 years from now all the stuff I've made will be in the same boat..... I ordered my very first tatting shuttle and got a book and DVD from the place you recommended and I hope to dive in soon and learn to tat! Your work is so pretty! Thank you for all the inspiration!

I always have the same feeling when buying handmade items for so less money, anyhow it seems not right to me that such delicate handcrafting isn´t valued enough anymore. But as you said, at the same I am always so very happy when I hear the most cheap price, I always try then to look not too happy so that the seller won´t notice that he/she could have said a much higher price, too.
Your lace gives it that little extra which makes it really 'you', that´s a wonderful inspiration to add personal crafting to fleamarket finds, love the combination of crafted items of 2 generations. Very pretty.
With my best wishes,
Suzi
